Black Rain (1989) is an American neo-noir action thriller directed by Ridley Scott. The film follows two NYPD detectives who arrest a yakuza member and escort him to Japan. After he escapes, the officers plunge into the Japanese underworld.
Nick Conklin, an NYPD detective, is under investigation for allegedly stealing money during a drug bust and is also behind on his alimony payments. After an interview with Internal Affairs, Nick and his partner Charlie Vincent witnessed a yakuza member, Koji Sato, kill some Japanese men during a lunch meeting. They arrest Sato and are ordered to escort him to Osaka, Japan. However, upon arrival, they are tricked by yakuza posing as police officers, who take Sato.
Nick and Charlie convince the Osaka police to let them observe the investigation. They are accompanied by Assistant Inspector Masahiro Matsumoto. Nick learns from Joyce, a nightclub hostess, that Sato is in a gang war with another yakuza boss, Kunio Sugai. During a police raid, Nick takes some counterfeit bills, revealing a counterfeiting war between yakuza groups.
One night, a gang attacks Charlie, and Sato kills him. Nick confesses to Matsumoto that he stole money in New York. They follow a lead to a steel foundry, discovering Sato’s plan to trade a printing plate for power. The police arrest Nick for carrying a gun, but he sneaks off the plane to continue the pursuit. Sugai explains his revenge plot against the U.S. for the Hiroshima bombing and the influence of Western ideals.
Nick and Matsumoto discover Sato’s plan to massacre Sugai’s gang. During a truce meeting, Sato betrays Sugai, leading to a gunfight. Nick captures Sato after a chase and brings him to the police. Nick and Matsumoto receive commendations, and before Nick leaves, he secretly gives Matsumoto the printing plates, showing his gratitude and friendship
