Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini, a nun with lung disease, repeatedly tries to start her own missionary order. She eventually convinces Pope Leo XIII to let her help the poor in New York instead of in China. Cabrini and her fellow nuns aid poor Italian immigrants in New York, facing many challenges, including hostility from the local clergy and threats from criminals.
Despite her health issues, Cabrini’s efforts led to the establishment of charity work, hospitals, and a children’s home. She overcomes numerous obstacles, including opposition from the mayor and being evicted from properties. With support from various immigrant communities and a New York Times reporter, Cabrini achieves her goals. She eventually builds a first-rate hospital and continues her work until her death at age 67. Cabrini is later canonized, becoming the first American saint and the patron saint of immigrants.
