In 2017, an elderly Murlikant Petkar visits a police station to file a complaint against the President of India for not receiving the Arjuna Award, claiming it would help his village. When an officer questions his eligibility, Murlikant recounts his story: In 1952, young Murlikant from Peth Islampur, Maharashtra, dreams of winning an Olympic gold medal for India but is mocked by classmates and scolded by his father. He runs away and joins the Indian Army Corps of EME, becoming a boxer. He competes in the 1964 International Services Sports Meet in Tokyo but loses focus in the final round, leading his coach, Tiger Ali, to stop training him.
In 1965, during the Indo-Pakistani war, Murlikant is severely injured, becoming a paraplegic. Depressed and suicidal, he is visited by Tiger Ali in 1972, who encourages him to compete in the Paralympics. Murlikant trains hard and wins the gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle swimming event at the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Heidelberg, setting a new world record and becoming a hero in his village. In 2017, his achievements are forgotten, but the police inspector contacts a journalist to write about him. A senior government official then informs Murlikant that he will receive the Padma Shri, a higher honor than the Arjuna Award. In 2018, Murlikant received the Padma Shri from the President of India. His story is celebrated as an inspiring tale of overcoming obstacles and mockery.
