Felonious Gru and Lucy Wilde recover the stolen Dumont Diamond from Balthazar Bratt, a former child star who becomes a supervillain after his show. However, after failing to capture Balthazar Bratt, who steals the Dumont Diamond to power a giant robot and destroy Hollywood, the married Anti-Villain League (AVL) agents Gru and Lucy are dismissed. Subsequently, Gru’s long-lost twin brother, Dru, invites Gru’s family to Freedonia, revealing that their father was a supervillain. Consequently, Gru and Dru team up to steal back the diamond, but Gru secretly plans to return it to the AVL. Meanwhile, Bratt kidnaps Gru’s daughters, leading Gru, Dru, and Lucy to rescue them and ultimately defeat Bratt. Eventually reinstated into the AVL, the family celebrates, and Dru, along with the Minions, steals Gru’s aircraft to continue villainy, with Gru and Lucy in pursuit.
