Richard Linklater produced and directed the 2023 American romantic black comedy film Hit Man, which he co-wrote with Glen Powell. The plot follows Gary Johnson, a psychology and philosophy professor at the University of New Orleans, who also works undercover with the New Orleans Police Department. When fellow cop Jasper, who poses as a hitman to elicit murder-for-hire confessions, is suspended, Gary takes over his role. Gary excels at the job, creating personas tailored to each suspect. He adopts the persona “Ron” to gain the trust of Madison, a woman seeking to kill her husband, but becomes sympathetic and romantically involved with her. Gary maintains his “Ron” persona while dating Madison and teaches her to use a gun for self-defense.
When Madison’s ex-husband Ray tries to have her killed, unknowingly contacting Gary, their confrontation leads to Ray’s murder, which Madison later confesses to. Gary reveals his true identity to Madison, causing a rift between them. The police gather evidence against Madison, and Gary, urged by Jasper, uses his “Ron” persona to solicit a confession from her. After a series of events, Gary and Madison murder Jasper, make it look like a suicide, and years later, live a happy life together with kids. The film is dedicated to the real Gary Johnson, honoring his achievements as a war veteran, professor, and undercover officer, with a note clarifying that he never committed murder.
