Maharaja is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language action-thriller film directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, who co-wrote the script with Raam Murali. Maharaja, a quiet barber in Chennai, lives a peaceful life until a tragic accident kills his wife and leaves his daughter, Jothi, traumatized. They affectionately name a dustbin “Lakshmi” after it saves Jothi. Later, when Jothi goes to a sports camp, Maharaja reports a bizarre robbery to the police, claiming Lakshmi was stolen. Despite the police’s initial amusement, they agree to investigate for a bribe.
Flashbacks reveal a dark past involving Selvam, a criminal whose actions indirectly led to the death of Maharaja’s wife. In the present, Selvam, seeking revenge, along with his accomplices, Dhana and Nallasivam, brutally assault Jothi. Maharaja discovers the truth and exacts revenge, killing Dhana and Nallasivam. Finally, Maharaja confronts Selvam, who realizes he had a hand in his own daughter’s suffering. Overcome with guilt, Selvam ends his life, leaving Maharaja and Jothi to find some semblance of peace.
