MaXXXine (2024) is an American slasher film. Ti West wrote, directed, produced, and edited it. This movie is the third in West’s X film series, following “X” and “Pearl” (both released in 2022). It is a direct sequel to the first film.
In 1985, in Los Angeles, during the Night Stalker murders, Maxine Minx auditions and lands the lead role in a horror film, “The Puritan II,” despite her past work in adult films. She tells her friend Leon and colleague Amber James, who invites her to a party, that Maxine declines. While working at a live peep show, a mysterious figure leaves a police tape of a failed pornographic film Maxine made with friends six years earlier. Maxine asks Leon to investigate the tape.
Amber and another adult entertainer, Tabby, are murdered and branded with Satanic symbols. A private investigator named John Labat threatens to expose Maxine’s past unless she meets his employer. She refuses, leading to more threats and confrontations. Labat and Maxine clash repeatedly, and her friend Leon is also murdered.
Maxine continues with “The Puritan II,” confiding in her agent Teddy Knight. She learns that her estranged father, televangelist Ernest Miller, and his followers are behind the murders, filming them to create a snuff film to expose Hollywood’s corruption. Miller tries to “save” Maxine through an exorcism, but police intervene, resulting in a shootout. Maxine escapes and confronts her father, eventually shooting him.
She envisions herself as a celebrity, credited with stopping her father, and dreams of continued success. A month later, Maxine is still working on “The Puritan II,” hoping her success will last forever.
