Missing (2023) is an American screen life mystery thriller film written and directed by Will Merrick and Nick Johnson from a story by Sev Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty. It follows June Allen, a teenager who tries to find her missing mother after she disappears on vacation in Colombia with her new boyfriend.
18-year-old June Allen lives with her single mother, Grace, in Los Angeles. When Grace goes on vacation to Colombia with her boyfriend Kevin, they go missing, prompting June to investigate. She discovers Kevin’s criminal past and hires Javier, a Colombian gig worker, to help. June learns that Kevin has a history of scamming women and believes he kidnapped her mother.
June’s investigation makes her suspect Grace’s lawyer friend Heather, but she finds Heather dead. The police kill Kevin in a raid in Colombia, leaving June at a dead end. She discovers a threatening email to Grace and realizes her mother’s past holds the key to the mystery. June learns her father, James, who she thought died of a brain tumor, plotted with Kevin to find and kidnap Grace and June. James, a former drug addict, seeks revenge on Grace for taking June away.
James kidnaps June and takes her to an abandoned house, where he has also detained Grace. Grace tries to escape but gets shot, yet she manages to fatally wound James with a glass shard. June uses a laptop to call 911 for their rescue. A year later, Grace recovers, and June attends college. Their story features on a true crime show, and Grace befriends Javier. The film ends with June and Grace reaffirming their love for each other.
