Moana (2016) is an American animated musical fantasy adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Set in ancient Polynesia, the film follows Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a chief in a coastal village. The ocean chooses Moana to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti. When a blight strikes her island, Moana sails in search of Maui, a legendary demigod, hoping to return the relic to Te Fiti and save her people. The plot is original but inspired by Polynesian myths.
On the Polynesian island of Motunui, the people worship the goddess Te Fiti, who created life using a pounamu stone as her heart. Maui, a shape-shifting demigod, stole the heart to give humanity the power of creation, causing Te Fiti to disintegrate and Maui to lose the heart and his magic fishhook to the sea.
A thousand years later, the ocean chooses Moana, the daughter of the island’s chief, to return the heart. Despite her parents’ attempts to keep her on land, Moana sets sail to find Maui and restore the heart to save her island from a blight. She faces various challenges, including an encounter with coconut pirates and a journey to the Realm of Monsters to retrieve Maui’s fishhook.
Moana and Maui eventually reach Te Fiti’s island, but Te Kā, a volcanic demon, attacks them. Moana realizes that Te Kā is actually Te Fiti, corrupted by the loss of her heart. She restores the heart, healing the land and sea. Te Fiti fixes Maui’s hook, and he apologizes to her. Moana returns home, becomes the chief and wayfinder, and leads her people on new voyages, with Maui accompanying them.
