Parasite (2019) is a South Korean dark comedy thriller film directed by Bong Joon-ho, who co-wrote and co-produced the film with Han Jin-won. It follows a poor family who infiltrates the life of a wealthy family.
The Kim family, living in a semi-basement flat in Seoul, struggles financially. Min-hyuk, a friend, gives them a scholar’s rock that promises wealth and suggests Ki-woo, the Kims’ son, take over his job as an English tutor for the wealthy Park family’s daughter. With a fake certificate, Ki-woo gets the job, and the Kims scheme to get hired by the Parks too. They replace the park’s staff with their own family members by deceitful means.
While the Parks are away on a camping trip, the Kims enjoy their house but discover the former housekeeper Moon-gwang’s husband, Geun-sae, living in a secret bunker. The Kims accidentally reveal their true identities, leading Moon-gwang to threaten to expose them. The Parks return early due to a storm, and the Kims barely escape after subduing Moon-gwang and Geun-sae. The rain floods their own home, forcing them into a gymnasium for shelter.
During a birthday party for Park’s son, Geun-sae escapes, killing Ki-jung and causing chaos. Ki-taek, driven by anger and Mr. Park’s disdainful reaction to Geun-sae’s smell, kills Mr. Park and flees. Ki-woo recovers from brain surgery to find his sister dead, his father missing, and his family convicted of fraud. He discovers his father hiding in the bunker of the park’s former home, now owned by a new family. Ki-woo vows to earn enough money to buy the house and free his father.
