In the 2020 action-adventure comedy film Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic, a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog with supersonic speed, teams up with a town sheriff to stop the mad scientist Dr. Robotnik. Jeff Fowler directed the film, which Pat Casey and Josh Miller wrote. It is based on the video game series published by Sega.
On a distant planet, Sonic, a young blue hedgehog with supersonic speed, is attacked by an echidna tribe. Consequently, his guardian, Longclaw the owl, gives him golden rings that open portals and sends him to Earth, staying behind to hold off the echidnas.
Ten years later, Sonic lives secretly in Green Hills, Montana, idolizing the local sheriff, Tom Wachowski, and his wife, Maddie. One night, Sonic accidentally caused a massive power outage. Consequently, the U.S. government enlists Dr. Robotnik to investigate. Realizing his cover is blown, Sonic plans to leave Earth but is discovered and tranquilized by Tom, accidentally opening a portal to San Francisco and losing his rings.
Reluctantly, Tom agrees to help Sonic, and they flee from Robotnik. During their journey to San Francisco, they bond. Meanwhile, Robotnik discovers Sonic’s quill holds limitless energy and plans to capture him. Although Sonic and Tom fend off Robotnik’s drones, Sonic is injured. In San Francisco, Maddie treats Sonic, and they recover the rings. Subsequently, Robotnik arrives with a quill-powered hovercraft. Sonic fights Robotnik across the world before being subdued in Green Hills. With Tom and the townsfolk’s help, Sonic revives and defeats Robotnik, sending him to a mushroom planet.
In the aftermath, Tom and Maddie stay in Green Hills and let Sonic live with them. Additionally, the government erases all evidence of the events. However, Robotnik, still in possession of Sonic’s quill, plans his return for revenge.
