The Beast (2023) is a science fiction romantic drama film directed and written by Bertrand Bonello. He co-wrote the story with Guillaume Bréaud and Benjamin Charbit. The film is loosely based on Henry James’s 1903 novella “The Beast in the Jungle.”
In 2044, artificial intelligence will take over most jobs, deeming humans incapable of decision-making due to their emotions. To find better jobs, some people purify their DNA by entering their past lives to eliminate strong emotions. Gabrielle, feeling aimless in her job, decides to undergo the DNA purification process. During one of her visits to the center, she meets Louis, and they instantly feel drawn to each other. In her first purification session, Gabrielle goes back to 1910 France, where she is a pianist and factory owner married to Georges. She rekindles a connection with Louis, whom she met years before, but their relationship remains platonic due to her fears. A factory disaster leads to their deaths.
Back in 2044, an android named Kelly cares for Gabrielle.She encounters Louis again at a themed club, where he expresses his hesitation about losing his emotions through the purification process. During a second purification, Gabrielle revisits 2014 as an actress in Los Angeles. Louis, an incel, stalks her but does not approach. After an earthquake, they briefly interact. Gabrielle hallucinates and shares her fears with Louis, who shares the same fears. Waking again in 2044, Gabrielle questions her emotions and returns for a third purification. In 2014, Louis breaks into her house with a gun and kills her.Upon waking, Gabrielle learns the surgery doesn’t work for her. She finds Louis at the club, and they dance to “Evergreen.” Realizing Louis has lost his emotions, Gabrielle collapses in anguish. The medium warns Gabrielle not to undergo the purification, and a gunshot is heard.
