The American crime drama film The Bikeriders (2023), written and directed by Jeff Nichols, takes inspiration from Danny Lyon’s photo book of the same name. In 1965, Kathy Bauer married Benny Cross, a hotheaded member of the Vandals Motorcycle Club, five weeks after meeting him. Photographer Danny Lyon travels with the Vandals, interviewing members and learning about their history. The club’s founder, Johnny Davis, inspired by the film “The Wild One,” faces challenges to his leadership but maintains control by allowing the club to expand.
In 1969, Benny is severely injured in a bar fight, and Johnny orders the Vandals to retaliate. Despite objections, Johnny pressures Benny to attend a motorcycle rally while he is still recovering. Benny rejects Johnny’s offer of club leadership. A delinquent known as “the Kid” tries to join the Vandals but is rejected after attacking Johnny.
By 1973, the Vandals had become more violent, influenced by drug-addicted Vietnam War veterans. Kathy narrowly avoids rape at a club party, leading to her demanding Benny leave the Vandals. Benny leaves Kathy for several days but later stages a break-in to help a member leave the club. Disillusioned by the violence, Benny quits the Vandals.
The Kid later kills Johnny and takes over the Vandals, turning them into a criminal gang. Benny, devastated by Johnny’s death, returns home and eventually moves to Florida with Kathy, where he becomes a mechanic and gives up riding motorcycles. They find happiness away from the biker lifestyle, though Benny occasionally misses it.
