The Boy and the Heron (2023) is a Japanese animated fantasy film. Long ago, a boy named Mahito Maki, who moves to the countryside after his mother’s death, discovers an abandoned tower near his new home and enters a fantastical world with a talking grey heron.
After a school fight, Mahito self-inflicts an injury, leading to an encounter with a speaking heron promising to help him find his mother. Nearly captured by a supernatural swarm of toads, Natsuko’s whistling arrow saves Mahito. Inspired, Mahito crafts his own bow, fletching the arrow with the heron’s feather to grant it true aim. Hisako interrupts him while he is reading a book when an ill Natsuko disappears into the forest. The heron deceives Mahito and the elderly maid, Kiriko, into seeing a watery imitation of Mahito’s mother.
In this world, a younger Kiriko saves Mahito from pelicans and a dolmen using a magic wand. They catch and sell a giant fish to bubble-like spirits called Warawara. Himi, a pyrokinetic young woman, protects the Warawara from pelicans. Kiriko mediates peace between Mahito and Birdman, restoring Birdman’s flight. Hereafter, returning briefly to Natsuko’s estate, Mahito continues his search for her.
In the parakeets’ kingdom, Mahito finds Natsuko and acknowledges her as his mother. Himi incinerates attacking paper. But all three are rendered unconscious. However, in a dream, a wizard reveals Mahito’s bloodline power and requests him to become the world’s custodian. Mahito rejects this, stating he must first embrace those who love him.
