Garfield, an obese and pampered orange tabby cat, lives with his beagle friend Odie and their owner, Jon Arbuckle. One night, dogs Roland and Nolan kidnap Garfield and Odie and take them to an abandoned mall. Fortunately, Garfield’s estranged father, Vic, who had abandoned Garfield as a kitten, rescues them. Jinx, a vengeful Persian cat and the dogs’ boss, then demands that Vic, Garfield, and Odie steal milk from Lactose Farms in exchange for her forgiveness. The trio reluctantly agrees and plans the heist with the help of Otto, a bull separated from his girlfriend, Ethel.
As they carry out the heist, Garfield and Vic clash repeatedly until Vic reveals he left Garfield with Jon for his well-being. Moved by this revelation, Garfield forgives Vic. However, Jinx betrays them by calling animal control. Consequently, Garfield and Odie are captured and sent to the pound. There, they learn that Vic has always watched over Garfield. Jon soon arrives to bail them out. Determined to save Vic from Jinx, who plans to kill him, Garfield, with Otto’s help, thwarts Jinx. Eventually, they capture her.
Finally, Garfield reconciles with Vic, who moves in with them, becoming part of their family.
