Wildcat (2023) is an American biographical drama film that tells the story of American novelist Flannery O’Connor as she struggles to publish her first novel. Directed by Ethan Hawke and written by Hawke and Shelby Gaines, the film also draws on O’Connor’s short stories.
Flannery O’Connor, a young Southern writer and devout Catholic, imagines a melodramatic movie trailer featuring a wild boarder named Star Drake. The film intertwines various real and imagined episodes, following stories like “Everything That Rises Must Converge,” “Good Country People,” and others.
After winning a writing competition, she travels to New York to secure a publisher for her novel “Wise Blood,” but refuses to outline her work. She shares a mutual romantic interest with Robert Lowell, but he marries Elizabeth Hardwick instead. At a writers’ party, O’Connor shares an anecdote about her childhood, showcasing her unique character.
Upon returning from New York, she feels ill and is diagnosed with lupus, the disease that also claimed her father’s life. She initially avoids treatment but eventually receives medical care, leading to mobility issues. Her mother, Regina, who is racist and critical of Flannery’s abrasive work, tries to help her.
An Irish priest advises her on her writing and spiritual struggles, suggesting she use her writing as an act of charity. After receiving a letter from Lowell announcing his marriage, Flannery dedicates herself to her writing. She lives fourteen more years before dying from lupus, expressing gratitude posthumously for the pigs’ pituitary glands used in her treatments.
